Outsoucing not key factor in US Job decline
12 Mar 2004

Economists say they believe outsourcing has affected the ailing U.S. jobs market but it's not the main reason.

In a survey of 55 economists, the Wall Street Journal said most admit they are stumped by the lack of new jobs in an expanding economy. But, only 16 percent say they believe that moving jobs overseas played a "significant" role.

Despite the weak job growth, economists are standing by their forecasts the economy will continue to grow at a healthy pace this year.

They further said the Federal Reserve will put off thoughts of increasing interest rates until the second half.

Last week, the government surprised economists by announcing that only 21,000 new nonfarm payroll jobs were created in February, far short of the consensus forecast of 125,000 and the 150,000 or so jobs per month needed to keep up with population growth.
